Connecticut Obituary Collection - Teunis van der Veen, M.D.
Teunis van der Veen, M.D., 80, of 164 Long Meadow Hill Road,
Brookfield, a very caring and loving person, went to God on
Oct. 29, 1998, while vacationing with relatives in Portugal.
Dr. van der Veen was born in Hallum, the Netherlands, April 1,
1918. He spent the first 34 years of his life in his homeland,
graduating with honors from the University of Utrecht in 1946
and from the University of Amsterdam Medical School in 1949.
Late in 1952, Dr. van der Veen came to the United States and
early in 1953, began an internship at Trinity Lutheran Hospital
in Missouri. The next six years saw training and service in
obstetrics and gynecology, followed by a residency in psychiatry
at Philadelphia's Temple Medical School.
In 1966, Dr. van der Veen received a dual appointment to the
medical staffs of Bridgeport Hospital and the Hall-Brooke Hospital,
and in April of the following year, was named Acting Director of the
Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic.
Subsequent to his retirement from active staff duties in 1985, he
continued to consult and contribute his extensive talents to the
American Psychiatric Association, the World Federation of Mental
Health and the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy.
He enjoyed traveling and most especially his family.
Dr. van der Veen is survived by his daughter, Yvonne van der
Veen-Pierce, his son-in-law, Randall Pierce, and three grandchildren,
Richon, Tara and Alexa, all of Brookfield; as well as a sister, Brecht
Broersma, and brother-in-law, Jon Broersma; a sister-in-law,
Wieke van der Veen; and seven nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn (Dunham) van der Veen,
and his brother, Jacob van der Veen.
Friends will be received in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11
Granville Avenue, Danbury, on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m., with
funeral services at 4 p.m. Pastor David Reinhardt of the Baptist
Church of Danbury will officiate.
